She was the dean’s daughter and one of the first to hear his fantastical story on a rowboat ride in 1862. Carroll met Alice while tutoring at Oxford University. Alice is inspired by a 10–year–old little girl named Alice Liddell. Many of the characters in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland were based on real life people and places Carroll encountered during his life. What is less well known is Lewis Carroll’s (whose real name was Charles Dodgson) inspiration for the story. Her trip to Wonderland is quite well known around the world.

She asks if Edith has ever watched their father at work. It is awful and feels so very Victorian.Īlice awakens in the asylum clinic and Edith is there. And that was when he started giving her liquid heroin. Alice’s mother passed away, and not only did he harvest her teeth, but that was the night Alice managed to sneak in to spy on his work. In the finest of Victorian medical traditions, he was also a grave robber for teeth. Porcelain was commonly used for this, but nothing looked more like teeth than actual teeth. Lutwidge mainly made dentures for his patients. Her father was a busy and prosperous dentist. Lorina played with her happily, and Edith was a much-loved baby.
Alice’s memories of her childhood were good. She puzzles for a moment on why she always seems to go the wrong way, when the Cheshire Cat turns into Morton.Īnd finally, we get some back story that helps show us how things got to where they are now. She has not felt like she fit in since before her mother died. Their conversation is reminiscent of therapy as both cakes make her feel like she does not fit in. She meets the Cheshire Cat who gives her cakes to taste, one of which makes her shrink and one of which makes her grow. When Alice is affected by the drugs, her mind goes to Wonderland. Hulda has them carry Matthew and Alice up to the clinic. Hulda makes it clear that Alice is off limits for their sinister shenanigans while they try to shift blame on each other. Fortunately for them, Mistress Hulda walks in on them. They inject them both with liquid heroin and fill more syringes. They offer to quietly sneak back to their rooms, but Thomas and Theodore have other ideas. And that night, Matthew finds her again, this time with keys to the cellar.Īlice Ever After #3 opens as the two orderlies find Alice and Matthew in the cellar. Alice meets Mistress Hulda, the contrary woman in charge. After she leaves, Matthew introduces her around, then shows her the locked door to the cellar, where the drugs are kept. Alice assures Edith that she is being cared for well and the patients are unusual. Matthew, another patient, knocks on the door and says Alice has a visitor, her sister Edith. As she dances with Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the scene changes to London where she is in the asylum and an orderly is dancing with her unconscious body and another is looking at her dress.
